The Past Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another action in the past. It helps to show the sequence of past events.

Structure of Past Perfect Tense

1. Affirmative Sentences (سادہ فقرات)

Structure:
Subject + had + past participle (V3) + object

Usage of Past Perfect Tense

  1. To describe an action completed before another action in the past:
    • When I reached the station, the train had already left.
    • جب میں اسٹیشن پہنچا تو ٹرین پہلے ہی جا چکی تھی۔
  2. To express a past event completed before a specific time:
    • By the time she arrived, I had prepared dinner.
    • جب تک وہ پہنچی، میں کھانا تیار کر چکا تھا۔
  3. To show regret or wish about the past:
    • I wish I had studied harder.
    • کاش میں زیادہ محنت کرتا۔
  4. For reported speech (indirect speech):
    • She said she had finished her homework.
    • اس نے کہا کہ اس نے اپنا ہوم ورک مکمل کر لیا تھا۔

Common Mistakes in Past Perfect Tense

🚫 Incorrect: She had ate dinner.
Correct: She had eaten dinner.

🚫 Incorrect: He had went to school.
Correct: He had gone to school.

🚫 Incorrect: They had completed their project yesterday.
Correct: They had completed their project before the deadline.
(Past Perfect should not be used with a single past time reference like “yesterday.”)
